Ulcerative colitis is a medical condition in which inflammation in the area of the colon, or large intestine, becomes present. This inflammation may also become evident in the area of the wall of the rectum. The ulcerative colitis symptoms that result due to the inflammation can prove to be extremely painful and devastating to the individual that suffers from this challenging medical disorder.

In the United States alone, it has been determined that as many as half a million individuals suffer from the effects of this condition. Any person, at any age can develop this colon problem – even children. Here, you will be introduced to the many symptoms that plague these people. If you suspect that you or someone that you know suffers from this, this article may prove to be especially helpful in obtaining medical care.

Common Ulcerative Colitis Symptoms

One of the first ulcerative colitis symptoms that individuals notice is mild to severe cramping in the area of the abdomen. This may start as a simple pain, and develop into severe cramps that are completely unbearable. This is a direct result of the ulcers that develop in the walls of the colon. However, it can also be a result of the contractions of the muscles when the walls of the large intestines become inflamed.

The muscles that surround this area are not accustomed to the swelling and work to move so that the body has room for the expanding colon. Individuals who suffer from these cramps have been noted in stating that it can be either dull and aching or severe and sharp. It all depends on the severity of the condition as a whole.

Many individuals who experience the complications associated with this colon problem find that they experience gastrointestinal problems. While constipation may be experienced, it is often considered to be a rare occurrence. Most people with ulcerative colitis experience frequent and painful diarrhea. Many of these sufferers also notice that there is bleeding from the rectum.

While most common when diarrhea is experienced, it is also possible to experience this problem even when bowel movements are not being experienced. Many initially believe that this symptom may be the onset of hemorrhoids only to discover that it is ulcerative colitis. Any time that bleeding from the rectum is experienced, it is appropriate to seek medical attention as soon as possible.

There are many individuals who will find that their appetite is suppressed when they experience ulcerative colitis. Doctors and other specialists believe that this may be a result of the “full” feeling that is produced when the intestines experience swelling. Other specialists believe that this may be due to the fact that the individual is nervous when it comes to gastrointestinal complications, such as painful diarrhea, and they elect to avoid eating until absolutely necessary. Then, there are many who feel that appetite suppression may be a direct result of both beliefs. Regardless of the reason, this can become a real issue for those that suffer from this colon complication.

There are many who suffer from a general feeling of malaise, and extreme fatigue. Swelling in other areas of the body, such as the joints, may also prove evident in those that suffer from this condition. If you suffer from any of the ulcerative colitis symptoms mentioned throughout this article, or know someone who does, medical attention is advised. Early diagnosis and treatment have proven to be beneficial for many sufferers.

Ulcerative colitis usually appears in both men and women somewhere between the ages of 15 and 30 and occasionally in people in their later years, between 50 and 70 years of age. It seems to be hereditary; with studies showing that up to 20% of people who get ulcerative colitis also have a close family member or a relative who also battle the disease. People of all races can get this disease, but for some unknown reason, people of Jewish descent and Caucasian people are more likely to contract ulcerative colitis. Studies have also shown that if you reside in an urban area or an industrialized country, you may be more likely to contract this IBD.

What is ulcerative colitis? It is an IBD, or inflammatory bowel disease. This is the common name given to those diseases that cause inflammation in the colon and rectum. Inside the colon, open sores form in the areas where inflammation has destroyed the cells that naturally line the colon. Patients may experience frequent and bloody diarrhea, along with abdominal pain. People with ulcerative colitis have also been known to experience mild to severe symptoms such as fatigue, fever, weight loss, joint pain, skin lesions, anemia, and loss of appetite. Children who suffer from this IBD have also had difficulties with healthy growth.

When our immune system experiences an abnormal reaction to the bacteria in our digestive tract, the result seems to be ulcerative colitis, although nothing has yet been confirmed or denied by experts. The symptoms can be consistent for a time and then seem to disappear for a while, only to return again. Some people find that certain foods can exacerbate their symptoms. One study reported that processed red meat, alcohol, some carbohydrates, and other processed proteins were problematic for some people suffering from ulcerative colitis. A high intake of sweet foods was shown to increase the risk of developing the disease. On the flip side, a high intake of foods containing Vitamin C may help to not only control symptoms, but also to help prevent the disease.

In order to test for ulcerative colitis, your physician may perform a colonoscopy and take a biopsy of the colon lining during the same procedure. Most likely, he will take blood tests, stool samples, and/or administer a barium X-ray so he can better see your colon and make a determination from a combination of the results.

Colon cancer could be a concern for those who have suffered from ulcerative colitis for 8 to 10 years, or when there is a hereditary commonality. It’s important to be under consistent physician care in order to regularly check for colon cancer if you have this inflammatory disease. The biopsies taken during a colonoscopy can often predict whether or not you are at risk for colon cancer and then preventive surgery can be performed.

Despite the fact that there is no cure for ulcerative colitis, proper treatment can be administered in order for the disease to go into remission. Your physician may prescribe a steroid medicine or a medicine that will help control your immune system. Sometimes surgery is required, but usually only for severe cases.

Natural remedies for ulcerative colitis include taking probiotics, which are naturally friendly bacteria that seem to help control inflammation in the body. In addition, supplements of Omega-3 Fatty Acids, oral aloe Vera gel, Boswellia, folic acid, and Bromelain have been recommended by some physicians to help treat the symptoms of ulcerative colitis.

Have you tried noni juice for your ulcerative colitis? If not, then you may want to think about trying it. Over the years, there have been many reports that drinking a healthy dose of noni juice has decreased the symptoms of ulcerative colitis. Some people have even reported that through the use of this revolutionary juice, they have even been able to reduce the use of pain medications and doctor’s visits dramatically.

Okay, so what is noni juice? Noni is an extract of a Polynesian flower that is said to have many healing characteristics. Some of these have been proven to be accurate and yet others are not proven. There are many people that swear by the noni juice to heal a variety of medical conditions like breast cancer, skin conditions and even ulcerative colitis. The healing benefits are said to assist with digestion as well as clearing the system of unhealthy toxins in the body. Some are skeptical of this and so far, there are not many actual scientific studies completed to prove or disprove these ideas.

The people that have used the noni juice for ulcerative colitis have sworn that through the use of this product and the proper body maintenance they have the ability to maintain a more active lifestyle. They have been able to see a reduction of inflammations and additionally have felt less pain and have had to have fewer surgeries and emergency room visits. Remember though, that a factor in this is also drinking plenty of fluids as well as a proper diet. You will also still need to keep a journal to categorize what you are eating and make sure that what you are putting into your body will not cause an inflammation and will pass comfortably through your bowels.

The noni juice is a homeopathic remedy and the use of it should still be referenced with your doctor. Most often, a doctor will not have a problem with you seeking homeopathic remedies such as noni juice as long as they still have the opportunity to monitor your overall health and medications. Your doctor will make sure that the progress that you are making is the most positive for you. The last thing that your doctor will want to see is your body and health tasking a turn for the worse. They do have a vested interest in your health.

Can noni juice be a true benefit? Maybe it can, maybe it is not a cure all. The only person that can tell if it will work for you is you. The choice is yours if you choose to use noni juice to assist you with your ulcerative colitis. There are reports that it is beneficial and has drastically reduced symptoms. If you do choose to try noni juice, then understand that you will not see benefits overnight. It will take time for maximum benefits. And be sure to talk to your doctor about this and any other dietary changes that you may be considering.

Do you have ulcerative colitis? This can be a painful problem to have. Chances are that if you have had this problem for a while, then you have already learned how to handle it as well as what to do if you have an ulcerative colitis attack. There are actually several things that you can do to make things easier for your day to day lifestyle. This disease does not have to stop your life.

Stress is very important to you if you have this disease. You may experience additional flare-ups and it may take longer for you to go into remission. Your diet can have a significant impact in all of this. Understand that there is no specific diet that you should be on when you have this disease, but it does take paying attention. You may need to write down the foods that you eat for a period of time so that you can tell what foods are causing inflammation and which ones do not. This will provide you with increased comfort as you weed out the foods that you cannot tolerate very well. As you do this, you can find foods that do not cause pain and you can inject them on a more regular basis into your diet. Talk to your doctor about the foods that are causing you pain and inflammation.

There are some things that you should stay away from in dealing with this disease. Some of these include dairy and high fiber foods. You will also need to stay away from foods like nuts, seeds and popcorn. All of these can either inflame or block the passages to the bowels. This can additionally add to the discomfort that you may feel during flare-ups.

Make sure that your diet does include all of the nutrition requirements that are necessary to your good health. If you do this and maintain it, then you will significantly reduce the pain and inflammation associated with this disease. Make sure that you do have low fat dairy and nutrient rich cereals and breads as well as fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet. Lean meats are also good for a person dealing with ulcerative colitis.

Your doctor may design a special diet for you based on the results from the journal that you keep. The only way that anyone can design a specific diet in this case is to know what is causing the flare-ups, medications and your lifestyle. Reduce your stress and eat right to make things less painful.

It is your choice as to whether you choose to follow a plan that your doctor sets out for you. You can choose to formulate a diet that is beneficial to you without the consent of your physician, but this can be harmful as your doctor will need to be sure that your medications and diet will decrease the chances for inflammations and pain. Following a good course of action will allow you to live a semi-carefree lifestyle quickly.

Unfortunately, there is still a lot that is not yet known or fully understood about the condition we know as Crohn’s disease. There are currently several ongoing theories and various clinical studies being conducted in hopes of learning exactly what causes Crohn’s disease, but as of now, the general consensus is that a genetic predisposition, as well as exposure to certain environmental factors along with abnormal responses within the body’s immune system are the main culprits to blame.

Crohn’s disease, also referred to as CD, is a part of a collective group of digestive-related illnesses known as IBD or inflammatory bowel disease. With this condition, the intestines become inflamed, causing mild to severe symptoms, alternating with periods of flare-ups and remission. If left untreated, the intestines are also unable to absorb nutrients due to the inflammation, which will inevitably lead to other serious complications like malnutrition.

Possible Causes and Risk Factors of Crohn’s Disease

Named for Dr. Burril Crohn, who along with two fellow doctors extensively researched and documented their findings about bowel and intestinal illnesses in 1932, Crohn’s disease and other similar inflammatory bowel diseases are often confused with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which is actually quite different.

Many doctors and scientists believe that Crohn’s disease is largely caused by an abnormal reaction to a certain bacteria that’s normally present within the human intestinal tract. In most people, this necessary and rather beneficial bacteria usually works by helping with the process of digestion, but in those with CD, the immune system reacts differently to the bacteria, causing the inflammation to occur.

Other causes that may increase the chances of someone being affected by Crohn’s disease include the following:

- Environmental Factors: Environmental factors, including smog, cigarette smoke and second-hand smoke, may contribute toward causing Crohn’s disease as they are believed to alter the efficacy of the immune system. Following a diet that’s high in carbohydrates, sugars, and saturated fats and one low in proteins and the vitamins and minerals we gain from fruits and vegetables may also increase the likelihood of acquiring CD.

- Ethnic Heritage: Although researchers aren’t yet sure why, or what causes Crohn’s disease to occur more in certain ethnicities, they do know that certain races have a higher rate of developing Crohn’s disease in comparison to others. The groups most affected are Caucasians, and also Jewish people specifically of Ashkenazi descent who are three to six times more likely to have the condition.

- Family History: Apparently, having a close relative with Crohn’s disease, or any other inflammatory bowel disease, increases one’s risk of also developing the condition. Approximately 10 to 20 percent of all those diagnosed with CD have an immediate family member who also has some sort of IBD.

- Genetics: Due to the relatively high instances of Crohn’s disease running in some families, scientists naturally wondered if there was a certain gene responsible for carrying the disease, and recently discovered a defect that they feel is directly related to CD. Although it is believed there are still at least three to five other specific genes that may also contribute to developing Crohn’s disease, it is still unknown what their direct correlation is to the condition.

While certain risk factors do not necessarily cause Crohn’s disease to occur, there are those that do in fact aggravate existing symptoms of the condition and should be avoided if possible, or adequately treated. These include infections, certain hormonal changes, medication, and stress.

Although what causes Crohn’s disease is still largely a mystery as some people have none of the known risk factors at all, researchers continue to make strides in developing treatments and methods of early diagnosis.

Crohn’s Disease can strike at any age; however, it is most prevalent in people in their early twenties and during their 70′s and 80′s. Although this is a disease that causes gastrointestinal problems, it can cause arthritis, eye inflammation, and skin rashes. Crohn’s Disease and cancer are rare but can occur usually in instances where one has had Crohn’s Disease for several years.

First of all, let’s try and understand exactly what Crohn’s Disease is. Starting in the digestive tract, it can cause a variety of ailments. Mouth sores are common when suffering from this disease. Weight loss and abdominal pain are also results of Crohn’s Disease. Some people may experience diarrhea, fever, and in rare occasions liver problems.

After the digestive tract is affected, a person’s immune system can cause it to become inflamed. This in turn causes problems with the intestines, which is what causes symptoms to appear. Food can also contribute to this problem.

Although it is not known exactly what causes this disease, it is believed that it is inherited. It does seem to run in families. Studies have been conducted to see if a cause could be attributed to the sufferer’s surroundings or an infection they may have had. However, none of these studies produced results.

Crohn’s Disease and cancer can occur if regular screenings of the colon are not performed. This is why it is very important to have regular check ups if you have this disease.

Symptoms can alert your doctor to do tests to see if you have Crohn’s Disease. Weight loss, skin rashes, joint pain, and eye redness are all problems that you can have in addition to the digestive tract inflammation. Although many of these symptoms are results of other problems, only testing by your doctor can tell for sure what your problem is.

There are treatments for Crohn’s Disease that can put this illness in remission. There are many that are used to treat Crohn’s Disease, depending upon the symptoms and the whereabouts in the digestive tract. The most common treatments include the use of Sulfasalazine, Pentasa, and Asaco.

Since it takes these drugs approximately four weeks to work totally, many people have trouble paying for them. They are quite expensive. However, they are very effective at keeping the disease under control and in remission.

Naturally, people are concerned with Crohn’s Disease and cancer. They believe these two are irrevocably linked. However regular check-ups with your doctor can keep track of this for you. Tests done on a routine basis can catch this problem almost before it can occur. This is very important because you need to rest and take care of yourself when you have Crohn’s Disease. No need for worries before there is a real reason to worry. There is a risk of developing colorectal cancer in areas which are inflamed. Typically, this risk is quite a bit less until you have had Crohn’s Disease for several years.

Remember an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, so have regular checkups, take your medicine, and follow up with your doctor. Crohn’s Disease does not have to become a real problem unless you allow it.

Curing Crohn’s disease is not an easy task when the medical community states that there are no known cures for it. At present, more than two million people in the United States have been diagnosed with this disease. Some believe it to be related to a low stomach acid response that triggers the condition while others think it is an auto-immune response that causes the flare ups.

To those who suffer from Crohn’s disease, the symptoms can be extremely painful and disrupt the social, everyday lives of those who are experiencing flare-ups. Many individuals who suffer from this disease are not able to hold down steady employment and have to be on constant vigilant guard that a flare-up can happen at any given time.

Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory disease of the bowels that is episodic. The inflammation of the digestive tract can lead to ulcers, fistulas and obstructions within the small and large intestine. Other complications of Crohn’s disease can also result in the inflammation of the eyes and can also induce arthritis in some cases. Also, no two patients will experience Crohn’s disease in the same way.

Some patients will be in remission and not experience any symptoms of the disease for long periods of time, while others will experience ongoing episodic flare-ups almost constantly. Many sufferers use the Crohn’s disease activity index (CDAI) to measure the severity of the disease.

Although curing Crohn’s disease is not optional at this particular time, there are medications and natural remedies that many individuals use to keep the disease in check and alleviate the symptoms. It has been proven that some of the natural remedies will go toward helping the natural healing of the body that is affected by the disease and also help to reduce to episodes of flare-ups that can occur by Crohn’s disease.

The right diets of Crohn’s disease sufferers are very critical to realize the success of natural treatments. Many will get relief from the disease by avoiding the intake of wheat, milk and yeast. Also, much research has shown that the proper diets that include Omega-3 fatty acids and the intake of Omega-6 fatty acids will improve the chances of attaining long term remission of the disease. Flaxseed oil and fatty fish, like salmon and trout contain the Omega-3 fatty acids. Corn oil and sesame seed oil contains the Omega-6 fatty acids.

Another good oil is hemp oil. Hemp oil contains Omega-3, 6 and 9. The anti-inflammatory make-up of this oil greatly helps reduce the inflammatory condition that is associated with Crohn’s disease if taken on a daily basis.

Candida has also proven to be a problem that is directly related to Crohn’s disease. This is a fungal growth that is caused by the destruction of good bacteria in the digestive tract through the use of antibiotics and steroids. Candida occurs as a yeast in the bowel tract, but a compromised immune system can cause an overgrowth of this yeast, which might spread to the blood, causing low energy levels.

Zell Oxygen and Wormwood are two types of natural remedies that can be acquired at health food stores to remedy Candida and Crohn’s disease. Because it is so important for the intestinal tract to recover from inflammatory responses, a diet of high fiber of whole foods is recommended for remission cases.

Keeping a low fat diet in relapsed cases of flare-ups also is recommended to help stabilize the digestive tract from triggering more episodes from cycling. Although the disease is not cured, intestines with less inflammatory triggering is better able to absorb nutrition and lower the risks of fistulas, ulcers, obstructions and diarrhea.

So, although curing Crohn’s disease is not an option, this goes a long way to show that, with the proper diet and nutrition, there are effective ways to naturally ease the effects of the disease and lesson the flare-ups from happening.

If you are one of the more than two million people in the United States suffering from inflammation in the digestive tract, known as Crohn’s disease, then learning what to do to prevent Crohn’s disease is a topic that would benefit you.

Crohn’s disease can lead to ulcers, fistulas and obstructions both in the large intestine and the small intestine as well. The causes of this particular inflammatory disease are unknown, and there is no known cure. Some research scientists hold the opinion that Crohn’s disease is related to an auto immune response within the bodies, while some others are of the opinion that it has to do with a response from low stomach acid. The complications associated with this particular disease are not solely restricted to the intestines, and other issues can arise including inflammation in the eyes and arthritic joints.

Just as it is possible for patients to experience remissions, it is also quite possible for relapses to occur with no warnings and symptoms flaring up. It is essential for people with Crohn’s disease to learn their triggers so that they can learn what to do to prevent Crohn’s disease relapses. Successful natural treatment begins with a proper diet, and many people who know what to do to prevent Crohn’s disease avoid yeast, milk and wheat in order to get relief from their symptoms. It has also been suggested that natural remedies can aid in the natural healing processes associated with the body, reducing the chance of relapse. Many sufferers of Crohn’s disease opt to go for natural remedies over conventional medicine as medications for this particular disease tend to be expensive.

Research has shown that people suffering from the disease who are trying to decide what to do to prevent Crohn’s disease flare ups can up their intake of Omega-6 fatty acids like corn oil and sesame seeds, along with Omega 3 fatty acids like fatty fish and flaxseed oil in order to lessen the risk of flare ups by improving the chance of remission. People who are not suffering from the disease who want to prevent Crohn’s disease from ever becoming an issue can do the same thing as a natural preventative measure. One option for an oil to try is hemp oil, which contains Omega 3, Omega 6 and Omega 9 and which has natural anti inflammatory properties that pack quite a punch when taken as a daily supplement.

Other potential remedies that are excellent for people deciding what to do to prevent Crohn’s disease are Zell Oxygen and Wormwood, which are natural remedies that can be found in health food stores. High fiber whole food diets are also excellent for remission cares, and low fat and low residue diets are ideal for those who are dealing with relapse symptoms. One of the biggest steps to take when warding off Crohn’s disease is simply to obtain the proper nutrients through your nutrition plan, which will promote self healing and will be vital in allowing the intestines and the rest of the body to recover from the responses associated with this incurable disease.

When you need to look for information on Crohn’s disease, you’ll find that time and again, you will be brought back to information on a diet that is low in acid, otherwise known as an alkaline diet. What is an alkaline diet, and how can it help you deal with this disorder? For many people, the proper treatment for this disorder does not lie with drugs, but rather with the use of thoughtful diet and planning, so take a look to see what facts you need to know!

When you are thinking about an alkaline diet to better keep Crohn’s disease in remission, it is important to think about what an alkaline diet actually entails. At the most essential level, alkaline diets are diets that are low in acids. They tend to be very high in fresh fruit, vegetables, roots and tubers, and they also tend to be fairly low in grains fish and meat. When you are thinking about switching over to an alkaline diet, you should be aware that for it to take full effect, it might result in a very drastic change in lifestyle.

When you are considering Crohn’s disease and an alkaline diet, you should always think about how it affects you personally. It goes without saying that every condition is different, and that everyone’s body will react in a different way. This is why, unless your doctor feels otherwise, that it might be wise to really think about what what your diet needs to be for you. Observe your own body and figure out what foods are best for it, and then, if you find that when you eat foods that are more alkaline than acidic that your symptoms improve, it might be time to go ahead with a fully alkaline diet plan.

Essentially, when you are considering an alkaline diet, you are looking at a diet that is very similar to what our hunter-gatherer ancestors had. They didn’t have refined grain in their diets until the appearance of stone tools, and milk and cheese didn’t come until livestock were domesticated. You’ll also find find that an alkaline diet is one where salt consumption is fairly low, as is the consumption of sugar. As noted above, this can mean a large change! Take some time to think about what this might mean to you, and as you consider, remember to keep a food diary so that you can take a look to see how individual foods are affecting you.

As always, when you are considering a change, consult with your doctor. He or she can show you the best way to proceed if you want to try using an alkaline diet to treat Crohn’s disease, so make sure that you get an expert opinion. There is a lot of information out there, so just remember to ask and to figure out what the best options for yourself are!

When they rolled over Beethoven, besides composing moving pieces of art, the famous composer was found to have possibly suffered from Crohn’s disease. Has science also uncovered links between Crohn’s disease and kidney stones? A common form of kidney stone is composed of calcium. Scientists have determined a bacterium in cow’s milk has a possible link to Crohn’s disease.

Doctors sometimes give a misdiagnosis of appendicitis because of similar symptoms shared with Crohn’s disease and kidney stones. Crohn’s patients suffer chronic inflammation, which causes ulcers that irritate the digestive tract. When a hole develops between the intestine and the bladder, the result is frequent urinary tract infections. Infection is a major fact behind what causes kidney stones to form. Autoimmune disorders, such as Crohn’s disease, treat the body’s organs as enemy invaders. For most folks their immune system would kick into overdrive and remove the harmful bacteria. With Crohn’s disease, the bacterium discharged runs rampant.

The frequent diarrhea Crohn’s patients are plagued with is the primary reason behind their dehydration. One of the main factors in the formation of kidney stones is lack of water present in your system. This is a direct link between Crohn’s disease and kidney stones. Kidney stones are more common in Crohn’s patients with disease of the small intestine in general because of fat absorption. The risk for developing kidney stones is higher with Crohn’s disease sufferers due to a number of small bowel injuries, a common site of the diseased location, making them more vulnerable to attacks.

Weaker than normal immune response may trigger the bowel injury that leads to Crohn’s disease. The bowel puts up a protective wall that acts as a barrier in our line of defense against germ invasion. The wall keeps the good bacteria needed to digest our food inside the intestine and away from other vital organs. If the wall is penetrated by infection, an army of bacteria begins fighting a war on germs. The Crohn’s diseased immune system seems unable to tell the good from the bad bacteria. When our immune system fights bacteria, the area becomes inflamed.

Crohn’s disease and kidney stones are disorders that are both considered to run in families. High levels of acid irritate the digestive system, and contribute to the formation of kidney stones and life long stomach problems, such as Crohn’s disease. With Crohn’s disease the urine is more concentrated, a condition that is more likely to lead to stone formation. This can cause an obstruction of one of the tubes connecting the kidney to the bladder. It generally occurs here because this is where most of Crohn’s disease is located.

The prescription drug Viagra has begun to raise some hopes in Crohn’s patients. Research has discovered people that have long been afflicted with this condition produce fewer white blood cells than healthy people have do. Our white blood cells are in charge of healing damage to our body. Viagra pumps up the volume of blood flow and in tests have increased the count of white cells. Increased blood flow is essential in fighting dreaded inflammation.

Crohn’s disease and kidney stones need to be taken out of our medical history. Our gut reaction should be to take preventative measures to control persistent flare-ups. Armed with information is key in the strategy on winning this battle with germ warfare.
